Pro Bono

For the twelfth consecutive year, Mintz organized a pro bono clinic bringing together in-house counsel and nonprofit organizations. Following a training session on privacy, data security, and social media policies led by Mintz Member Geri L. Haight and Associate Christopher J. Buontempo, more than 35 in-house counsel teamed up in small groups to advise Boston-area nonprofits.

Through a collaboration with the Hofstra | Northwell Medical Legal Partnership (MLP), Mintz helped a woman suffering from endometriosis to successfully appeal a denial of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits.

Mintz helped represent Christina Griffin-Jones in a case challenging a lengthy police seizure of her cellphone without a warrant following her arrest at a Black Lives Matter protest. As part of a July 2022 settlement, the City of San Diego agreed to a new policy requiring officers to either obtain a warrant to hold or search any phone they seize, or to promptly return the phone.

For the past 15 years, we’ve partnered with national and local organizations to host Clinic in a Box®, a half-day pro bono clinic providing legal advice to Boston area nonprofits. To date, more than 300 in-house lawyers have participated in this annual event, a highlight of our pro bono work each year.

Language and cultural barriers often prevent people from seeking help. The struggles of low-income Asian immigrants are often overlooked, and we are proud to support GBLS’s work, which is making a big impact in the Asian American community.

Mintz attorneys helped Mass General Brigham (MGB) and other private-sector and health organizations launch and incorporate a nonprofit organization to combat the opioid crisis. They have advised RIZE Massachusetts on corporate, trademark, government contracting, and intellectual property issues.

Through a referral from the San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program (SDVLP), Mintz handled a guardianship case that enabled a family friend to become the guardian of two teens after one of their adoptive mothers passed away and the other became too ill to care for them.

In an interview, our client Nikki Bell shares how her experience with prostitution and trafficking led her to found an organization to help others in similar situations. She also discusses her collaboration with Mintz attorneys to draft pending Massachusetts legislation that would decriminalize prostitution for prostituted people while maintaining penalties for buyers and pimps.

Mintz attorneys participated in the sixth annual BizGrow Conference in Boston hosted by Lawyers for Civil Rights. The July 2022 event connected low-income minority, immigrant, and female entrepreneurs and small business owners with free legal consultations and business support.

A pro bono team secured a grant of asylum for a Honduran family of five while helping them obtain work authorizations, access psychological health services, and navigate school applications.
